In order for data governance to be successful, you should first define it.

"There’s no better way to gauge the vagaries of data governance than to ask stakeholders from various lines of business to explain it. You’ll hear everything from 'improving customer data' to 'semantic reconciliation'." Writes Jill Dyché at the Business Intelligence Network. Only after properly defining what data governance should embody in your company, you can design a data governance policy. Dyché then adds a third "d" to define and design: deploy.
