Hank Marquis states in his article on SearchCIO that performing an IT gap analysis can help to evaluate your current state of service delivery and determine where and why you should start your ITIL journey.
Gap analysis is fast and not expensive, and helps to identify the gaps in the service strategy. Ignoring these gaps could result in poorly allocated resources and an overall loss of time. Furthermore, the failure of one gap leads to failure of the next gap, and so on: one problem can quickly snowball into multiple issues.
