If you have made a New Year’s resolution to continue developing your career in ITSM then you may wish to gain new qualifications. This column is intended to give you some suggestions on relevant and respected ITSM qualifications that have become available since the last prime number year, 2003. All qualifications listed here are completely relevant to ITSM best practice in 2011.

I have listed 20 qualifications here but there are many others – check the websites of the qualification organisations for further information. Key disciplines covered here are:

  • IT governance
  • Risk management
  • Information security management
  • Enterprise architecture (TOGAF 9)
  • ITIL V3
  • ISO/IEC 20000: 2005
  • COBIT 4.1

Qualifications are listed in order of year of introduction and show the owner of the qualification, the level, the normal classroom course length, exam length and exam style. Click on a qualification to link to a description on the owner’s website. Courses and examinations are currently available for every qualification listed.

Levels are my own opinions and are denoted by:
L1 Foundation – Basic knowledge and understanding.
L2 Practitioner – Skills to apply/use.
L3 Manager or Consultant – Skills to drive implementation in an organisation.
